The flight time from the UK to Florida is around nine hours, the facilities for entertainment on the aircraft vary with each airline. Call Ocean-Florida on the number below for more information, or have a look at our flights section. If you are travelling with children, it's a good idea to err on the side of caution and take things to entertain them for the duration of the flight, not to mention any unexpected delays that might keep you hanging around the airport. A Gameboy is pretty much unbeatable - and could prove worth its weight in gold in terms of keeping bored children occupied.

Some airlines will let parents with very young children board first. There are often nappy changing facilities on aircraft, but don't rely on there being a supply of nappies onboard.

On UK registered aircraft, infants under six months must sit on the adult's lap with an infant strap during the flight. Infants over six months and under two years must sit on the adult's lap unless there is a vacant seat.

Unless a seat has been purchased, an infant has no baggage allowance. However collapsible pushchairs or buggies will be allowed in addition to your own baggage allowance.

TOP TIP
As the temperature when you step off the aircraft might well be over 100F, it might be a good idea to carry a change of clothes - at least a t-shirt - to change into for the journey to your accommodation.

Even though hotels offer lots of features and facilities traditionally associated with holidays, nothing can beat having your own private swimming pool, and it's rare that a villa rental has not got one! Not all are heated though, and those that are usually incur a daily heating charge, gas is more expensive than electric heating, and could ad a few hundred dollars to a fortnight's holiday.

Newer villas now have to have pool alarms on the patio doors by law - if you have smaller children or a baby ask your Ocean-Florida representative to find one for you. Then you have the villa benefit of being able to lounge by your own pool while your baby sleeps in the shade - something you couldn't always manage by a busier hotel pool!

Throughout your holiday make sure you and your children drink plenty of water. Keep cool with the aid of a battery powered fan if need be, and remember, pretty much every indoor space - from the airport to the cab, or a cruise ship terminal to a shopping mall - will have the air conditioning cranked up full!

TOP TIP
It's easy to drive in Florida, so don't restrict yourselves to the theme parks and miss out on some of the world's best beaches! Many are just over an hour's drive from Walt Disney World.

It's certainly a good idea - if you have the time - to allow a day or two to acclimatise before hitting a major theme park.

It's a good idea to book rides in advance as this means that you usually won't have to wait too long in a queue. The theme parks are huge. For instance, Walt Disney World is the size of greater Manchester . Do not expect or even try, to cover it all in a day. There's a lot of walking to do. You can higher 'strollers' for young children. Do try and stay as late as possible, as after dark there are beautifully lit parades, and the legendary Disney fireworks to enjoy. It's cooler too!

Having your own hire car in Florida , while not absolutely essential, is highly recommended. If you are renting a villa though, it certainly will be essential. People who walk to get somewhere in Florida are either brave or have broken down. The place just isn't set up for walking - it's generally too hot for a start - take more than a few steps out of the air conditioned comfort of your hotel or a shopping mall, and you'll be ready to lie down on a sun bed, by a pool or the ocean, which is what much of Florida is all about.

If you can't drive or don't want to, you will still be able to get around without to much trouble. Most of the main hotels in Orlando and Kissimmee run shuttle buses to the main theme parks which are usually free. On International Drive there's I-Ride, an excellent value shuttle bus service that goes to all the main attractions. It's known locally as the I-Ride 'Trolley', which could be confusing.
